What I did this week (23 feb 2012)
- Tried drawing with my oil-based pencil and got reprimanded for it being too dull. Then Boryana sharpened it with a knife and it got really sharp.
- Packed king cake in my lunchbag all week, which was completely fantastic.
- Had a rough time meeting with my team because I felt so sick and kept wanting to fall asleep and die. John held things together very admirably.
- Gladly accepted more DayQuil from Theresa, who makes a shockingly gracious drug dealer.
- Took a history of fashion quiz. I have no clue how well I did! Time will tell.
- Skipped wednesday’s friendship lunch because I felt so sick.
- Got chocolate from Bob.
- Raided the illustration department’s prop closet and took some great pictures of my friends.
- Began feeling better on thursday and made up for lost time by talking with lots of my friends and doing a lot of stuff. Also: eating more king cake.
- Fought with Amanda a lot, partially because I was sick and also partially because we’re both jerks. Hopefully things will be better next week.
- Entered the home stretch for my current team project. I am preparing for a long, painful weekend of finishing this thing.
What I did this week (16 feb 2012)
- Drew a model I’ve never seen before with an oil-based pencil and produced a drawing I am exceptionally happy with.
- Got to leave the worst class of the week early because I was sick. Thanks, teach.
- Tried to get team stuff done while one of my teammates is on a cruise in the Caribbean and not able to answer email or do any work. We are two weeks away from finals and I am stressing the heck out.
- Was sick all week. Blew my nose on cheap CCAD toilet paper all week, which only made things worse.
- Celebrated Valentine’s Day by eating way too many of Colleen’s candy hearts in my team class and getting a swollen tongue. I am not sorry for eating the candy, because it was delicious and holiday-appropriate.
- Got some DayQuil from Theresa, who is a good friend to me.
- Turned in the final for my illustration project, which was mounted using the cheapskate mounting method. I guess you could say I haven’t yet learned my lesson.
- Discovered that the frivolous parking ticket fee had been revoked. I am still grumpy that the whole incident ever occurred.
- Spilled a plate of tomato sauce all over my lap at lunch and went around all wednesday afternoon smelling like spaghetti.
- Got a packet of Emergen-C from Jason and used it on the spot. I didn’t have a water bottle, so I had to put the powder into a 1oz disposable mouthwash cup from Mr. Mahan’s office. And I had to stir it with my knitting needle. Despite this, I was able to drink it and strengthen my immune system!
- Did not plan ahead for Burleigh’s final project and had to print, cut, and assemble the thing thursday morning by the printers in Kinney.
- Talked about Flannery O’Connor in my American lit class! Enough said!
- Had another great knit-n-crit with Burleigh, going over our finals! Used the cheapskate mounting method for a second time this week.
- Almost finished a whole sock.
What I did this week (10 feb 2012)
- Drew Jeremy with ink. Boryana blacked out the entire second floor of AMF so we would be able to see the shadow shapes.
- Studied art history facts during friendship lunch. Extremely fun.
- Drew an animal with a colored pencil for 6 more hours. It is not even that good, you guys. But it is finally done.
- Drove to Akron on wednesday night to see a concert! and got back before midnight.
- Complained about Arthur Miller in my American lit class.
- Took my first art history test on thursday, which was totally invigorating and awesome.
- Had a good old-fashioned knit-n-crit in Burleigh’s class.
- Went to another concert on thursday night and met up with Sarah and Tom; it was quite an adventure!
What I did this week (2 feb 2012)
- Did a bunch of blind and continuous-line pen drawings of Bob. They came out better than I expected!
- Wrote a satirical poem about Sylvia Plath for American lit and read it aloud to the class. Still not sure whether I netted any brownie points for that.
- Got cited for a frivolous, newly-made-up CCAD parking violation. Stay tuned for the forthcoming angry tumblr about this.
- Participated in literally the most fun crit ever, in my team ad class. We formally judged our classmates’ projects using reaction cards that M-Tabs made for us. Topics discussed: drug dealers who use public transit; guerrilla ad campaigns involving collapsible bikes; how easy it is to make things for hipsters; the true meaning of “badass”; the ins and outs of roller derby; pointless government projects.
- Was alternatively annoyed and happy with my two ad teammates this week. Still anxious to see how the whole project will play out, and if I will end up killing someone or not.
- Took my history of fashion test, which covered the 18th century. Easier than expected, and extremely fun.
- Made a “metallic”-themed outfit for a Barbie that looked oddly different from everyone else’s.
- Drove home from school during rush hour. It really wasn’t as bad as I expected.
- Drew an animal with colored pencil for 6 hours.
- Filed an appeal against parking ticket, which consisted of filling out a boring form.
- Did that thing where I sit in illustration and jabber with Amanda and nobody else in the class talks so it’s kinda awkward.
- Had another surreal crit experience in Burleigh’s class, where we all had to sit at one gigantic table and talk about our direct mail projects. Everyone was worn out and pretty bored but being bored with your friends is still a great thing. I ate some crunchy organic carrots.
- Gained an even deeper affection for my ad classmates.
What I did this week (26 jan 2012)
- Drew Kelly to kick off this semester’s figure drawing class. A good beginning.
- Resumed the Worst Class of the Week, which actually wasn’t too bad this week. Just a serious waste of time.
- Complained about Sylvia Plath in my American lit class.
- Wore a bedsheet as a toga for extra credit in history of fashion. It made knitting difficult.
- Made an outfit for a Barbie using only a scrap of fabric, metal wire, nails, aluminum foil, and silver tape.
- Endured a super-long crit in my illustration class where we talked about animal drawings.
- Got my friends to wind my yarn for me during the aforementioned crit, which was fantastically good.
- Consumed giant giant giant portions of food at friendship lunch and was then really sleepy all afternoon, making it difficult to draw more animals.
- Spent a long time on the phone with Amanda agonizing over papercraft things.
- Endured torrential rain on thursday; wore my orange rain boots!
- Continued to complain about Sylvia Plath in my American lit class.
- Looked at tons and tons of great paintings in my 19th century art history class. I’m thoroughly enjoying my ability to sit in the dark, look at good paintings, talk about history, and eat elaborate brown-bagged lunches.
- Had one of those thursday afternoon classes where there is no actual teaching, only three hours of random sitting around and “working”. During which time I: talked to a bunch of classmates about my work; held an uncannily productive team meeting; almost went shopping for half-price muffins but didn’t actually; had one meaningful conversation and a bunch of silly ones; danced alone; hugged a bunch of my friends.
- Continued to knit at a furious pace.
What I did this week (19 jan 2012)
- Didn’t have school on monday, meaning I didn’t have figure drawing or electronic publishing (the worst class of the week). Instead I went thrifting and bought a half-naked Barbie doll for 90¢.
- Began the semester with a 9:30am tuesday morning class (which felt super-luxurious compared to my usual 8am start time).
- The aforementioned 9:30am class is readings in American literature. The teacher is nice but doesn’t seem to value good things. Also: she uses unnecessarily vulgar language while teaching. Lame.
- Kicked off my tuesday/thursday-lunchtime history of 19th-century art class with Ann Shifflet, my freshman art history teacher and one of my favorite people ever ever ever. A bunch of friendship lunch gang people are in the class with me! it’s going to be literally unbelievable and wonderful.
- Reunited with M-Tabs and all the other people in my team class. There are only 16 of us at this point and we’re as tightly-knit as I suppose an ad class could get.
- Got sorted onto a new team for a half-semester-long project. Not excited, but not upset.
- Stayed late tuesday afternoon for a three-hour history of fashion design class. The teacher is kinda boring but it should be a good experience. Lots of weird things on the horizon.
- Brought my half-naked Barbie to the fashion history class because the teacher told me to.
- Resumed my wednesday schedule with the 6-hour-long illustration methods class. There are a bunch of new people in this class that nobody knows.
- Wednesday friendship lunch! Got to see all my food-service friends.
- Drew animals! Ate chocolate cookies! Got reprimanded for speaking too loudly! (all the usual wednesday afternoon things.)
- Had to endure an utterly painful second American lit class on thursday morning, during which I realized none of my peers know anything about American history (“Christopher Columbus? he landed in Massachusetts, right?”).
- Listened to my American lit teacher misrepresent and criticize the Puritans—and argued with her about it.
- Gleefully resumed my thursday afternoon ad class (the best class of the week) and looked at a bunch of super-dated direct-mail things.
- In general: got a lot of knitting done.
What I did this week (end-of-semester edition!)
- Learned the hard way that pretty much nobody in town can do a coil bind longer than 11”.
- Was told that my drawings look like Ingres’, which is something teachers keep saying to me.
- Took my last anthropology test, which I felt really unprepared for but ended up doing well on anyway.
- Locked my keys in my car and had to have CCAD security break into my car (and they did an excellent job!)
- Turned in my final project for the Worst Class of the Week, ended up getting 100% on it! What a relief!
- Turned in my photo portfolio and said goodbye to Barb.
- Took my fourth and final science test, which seemed to go really well.
- Presented the final of my team’s seven-week-long signage redesign project, which also went shockingly well.
- Ate Christmas cookies and chocolate milk brought into class by Mrs. Tabler.
- Finished my illustration class with a short 90-minute crit.
- Visited Ian’s ceramic studio space where he gave me two amazing teacups.
- Had one last on-site friendship lunch where Dana also gave me an amazing teacup. (My friends are the best!)
- Re-printed, mounted, and wrapped all my work for Burleigh so I could turn it in for extra points. Ended up using the cheapskate mounting technique™ for several boards—don’t tell!
- Brought homemade gingerbread cookies into Burleigh’s class, which ended up getting kinda upstaged by Audrey’s Panera leftovers-in-a-trashbag. But that was ok.
- Didn’t have to go into class on thursday until 12:30; had an extremely short knit-n-crit.
- Said goodbye to absolutely everybody.
- Gave Mr. Burleigh a hug (not as awkward as you might think).
- In summary: WHAT AN AMAZING SEMESTER.
What I did this week (9 dec 2011)
- Participated in one last crit for my figure drawing class; could have used greater self-control.
- Had a mini-meltdown in my Worst Class of the Week, mostly because my inept teacher reprimanded me for using a gradient fill instead of two shapes, a blend, and a clipping mask. I am still justly furious.
- Kept my photo class at bay while we waited a half hour for teacher to show up. Not really. But seriously, yes.
- Got 100% on my photo final by completely honest means, exempting me from a bunch of extra work.
- Had a portrait photography crit, during which we hilariously cut Jason short by prematurely applauding.
- Started painting a portrait in acrylics that actually looks good, which was a huge surprise.
- Did very well on my last science quiz. (Thank goodness!)
- Had my photo taken.
- Got my team’s boards printed, mounted, and wrapped on thursday afternoon, which is a new personal record.
